The concept of leadership is often prescribed as a trait that somebody is born with, an inherent attribute that is blessed upon certain individuals. You know who I am talking about- the co-worker that is always speaking out with confidence at the meetings, the teammate who takes charge and courageously leads his-her team to victory, or the partner who leads their spouse along the right path when they have gone astray. Why are they so blessed with this talent? How can they be so courageous? Why am I not as confident and motivated to take charge and lead on my terms?
“Leaders aren’t born, they are made. And they are made just like anything else, through hard work. And that’s the price we’ll have to pay to achieve that goal, or any goal.” -Vince Lombardi
I love this quote because it is absolutely true. They is no such thing as a “leadership” gene. People are not chosen to be leaders, they decide to become leaders. If you are like most people and are waiting on the sidelines for your life to take shape, you are letting others lead for you. Leaders know what their priorities are and make their decisions based on these priorities. Have you ever tried to lead somebody somewhere without knowing where you are going or how to get there? Of course not! Leaders always know where they are going and they work out how to get there along the way.
So…work it out for yourself. Stop being led, take charge of your journey and make sense of your destination. Lead yourself there. If the goal is clear, the journey is easy.
